Job Announcement Job Title: Lawyer Job Location: Erbil Duration of Contract: 11 Months Organization: Democracy and Human Rights Development Center (DHRD) Deadline of application: April 20 2022 DHRD is seeking one lawyer for the Protecting and defending freedom of expression” Project that is funded by Un Ponte Per. Tasks and Responsibilities: Carry out daily field visits and conduct coordination and interviews with project beneficiaries. Assess legal needs of beneficiaries and pre-screen their vulnerabilities in order to be referred to relevant services (internally or externally). Monitor human rights’ violations, and pay particular attention to journalists at risk of harm and raise any protection concern or rights violation observed in the area, according to best practices in term of confidentiality and safety of beneficiaries. Conduct basic intake interviews with beneficiaries to assess legal needs and provide legal counseling on main issues encountered; Participate in case meetings for complex cases with legal issues, if requested by the project manager. Directly inform the project manager and case manager of any identified case at risk of harm to ensure immediate protection. Provide legal counseling and legal representation, and ensure prompt and appropriate service receiving by clients . Ensure proper filing and archiving of individual legal files to maintain data confidentiality. Submit weekly reports to the project manager including qualitative and quantitative data. Closely coordinate with the case managers, lawyers and project manager to ensure that all services are provided in a holistic and comprehensive approach. Ensure continuous communication and coordination with other agencies for referrals and service provision. Actively participate in the project coordination meetings. Submit weekly plans outlining caseload and movements to the project manager. Carry out all legal services in line with Iraqi law, humanitarian principles, international conventions on Journalists' rights and freedom of expression, and internal policies, ethical and best practice procedures of DHRD. Specific responsibilities and conditions: Ability to maintain confidentiality; Impartiality: non-discrimination on the basis of nationality, race, religious belief, political views, sexual orientation, social or other status; Ability to prioritize the safety of survivors, their family, witnesses and service providers at all times; A Safeguarding, Child safeguarding, and PSEA: the Employee is expected to adhere to conditions contained in the Code of Conduct and PSEA Policies. Breaches in the Code of Conduct and PSEA Policy will be dealt with in accordance with DHRD’s Human Resources Manual and may lead to sanctions being imposed including re-assignment of duties or termination of employment; Ability to maintain strong work ethics and ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure. Ability to lead, supervises, facilitate and motivate other staff in their respective tasks in a professional, respectful and supportive manner. Excellent personnel management skills, including diplomacy, tact and negotiating skills. Strong planning, organization and problem solving skills with ability to work both independently and within a team in a demanding work environment. Experience living and working in cross-cultural and remote environments. Ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
